Road America is located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, approximately 60 miles north of Milwaukee and around 150 miles north of Chicago.
The circuit is set within natural woodland and rolling terrain, giving it a very different feel from flat, modern race tracks. Its rural location is a key part of Road America’s identity and driving experience.
Unlike many circuits built on former airfields or industrial land, Road America was designed as a purpose‑built road course that follows the natural contours of the land.
Because of its location:
This natural terrain is one of the reasons Road America has remained largely unchanged for decades.
Road America measures approximately 4.048 miles (6.52 km), making it one of the longest permanent road racing circuits in the world.
Key layout characteristics include:
The length of the circuit means lap times are long, and mistakes are often punished over multiple corners rather than immediately.
Front Straight & Turn 1
The lap begins with a long run into Turn 1. The layout emphasises braking accuracy rather than late braking, as speeds are extremely high on approach.
Turn 3
One of the most significant braking zones on the circuit. The track layout here highlights how much Road America rewards discipline under braking.
The Carousel (Turn 14)
A long, sweeping right hander that seems to go on forever. The layout encourages patience and smooth throttle application rather than aggressive inputs.
Canada Corner (Turn 12)
Another major braking zone at the end of a long straight. Exit speed here is critical due to the length of the following section.
Kink & Kettle Bottoms
A flat out section for experienced drivers. The layout here shows how Road America blends bravery with trust in the car.
The Road America layout rewards:
Because of the circuit’s length, errors often cost time over several corners rather than just one.
In reality, Road America rewards discipline and accuracy far more than aggression.
Road America hosts:
Despite modern safety updates, the circuit has retained its classic character, which is why it remains a favourite among drivers and fans.
