Road America Overview

Road America is one of the most iconic road courses in the world. Located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the circuit is known for its long straights, heavy braking zones, and classic, old school layout set within natural terrain.

Often referred to as “America’s National Park of Speed,” Road America rewards bravery on the straights and discipline under braking. It is a circuit where mistakes are amplified due to the length and speed of the lap.

Road America Circuit Layout Explained

Road America measures approximately 4.048 miles (6.52 km), making it one of the longest permanent road courses in the world.

Key layout characteristics:

  • Extremely long straights
  • Heavy, reminder braking zones
  • Fast, flowing corners
  • Significant elevation changes

With lap times often exceeding two minutes, consistency and focus are essential throughout the entire lap.

Key Corners at Road America

Turn 1

A fast right hander at the end of the front straight. Braking stability is critical, as speeds are extremely high approaching this corner.

Turn 3

One of the heaviest braking zones on the circuit. A tight right hander where late braking is tempting but often costly.

Turn 5

A downhill braking zone into a medium speed corner. Maintaining balance under braking is key.

The Carousel (Turn 14)

A long, sweeping right hander that seems to last forever. Patience, balance, and smooth throttle application are essential to maintain speed.

Canada Corner (Turn 12)

Another major braking zone at the end of a long straight. Exit speed here is critical, as it leads onto one of the fastest sections of the lap.

Driving Tips for Road America

Road America demands a balance of speed and restraint.

Key tips:

  • Focus on braking accuracy, not late braking
  • Prioritise strong exits onto long straights
  • Be patient through long corners like the Carousel
  • Maintain concentration for the full lap

Because of the circuit’s length, small mistakes compound quickly.

Common Mistakes Drivers Make at Road America

  • Over braking into Turn 1
  • Attacking braking zones too aggressively
  • Rushing the Carousel
  • Losing focus late in the lap

Fast laps at Road America come from calm, repeatable execution rather than outright aggression.

Track Days at Road America

Road America hosts frequent track days, racing events, and manufacturer test sessions. The circuit’s wide layout makes it suitable for a range of experience levels, but the speeds involved mean preparation is critical.

Brake condition, cooling, and tyre management are especially important due to the long straights and heavy braking zones.
